FYI The World Does Not Revolve Around You
Does the world revolve around you?

Gosh, wanting to learn to ride and making that decision as winter descended on Minnesota was not the best timing. I don’t know about you, but most of my life has been in the “hurry up and wait” mode — a.k.a. patience! {bunny trail: a.k.a. means “also known as.” I just found that out!} There are too many incidents in my life that point to patience. What’s up with that?

FYI The World Does Not Revolve Around You

What is it about patience that is so important? Maybe that’s the wrong question to ask. How about, have you ever been around an impatient person? Yuck. They are usually self-centered, acting rude with short answers wearing a nasty scowl on their face!

How attractive is that? Okay, now for the honesty part … does that describe you? Even occasionally? It does me. Woof. I’m starting to get why patience is important.

FYI The World Does Not Revolve Around You - Helen Keller

Have you ever watched a movie and have a defining moment of truth? I remember a time when my daughter was young she experienced an “aha” moment. We were watching the old black and white movie Helen Keller with Patty Duke playing Helen.

In the movie Helen’s parents had allowed her to do whatever she wanted because they felt sorry for her being blind and deaf. The result, Helen was a self-centered out of control little girl who had tantrums when she didn’t get her own way.

In comes Anne Sullivan {an amazing woman who overcame several difficulties in her own life} who begins to give Helen boundaries in an effort to bring discipline {discipline seems to go hand-in-hand with patience} into Helen’s life.

Although it was a struggle for Helen, her parents, and Anne the results are recorded in history. The “aha” moment my daughter experienced sounded something like this, “Mom! I get it! I get why you discipline me. It is so I would be a better person and get along with others, not just think about myself!” Wow. Thank you Hollywood for the parenting help.

Back to patience. It is February 20, 2010 and I’m waiting to take my motorcycle basic skills class in April. And I’m waiting to purchase a bike until I see what kind of skills and abilities I will have. I’m working on doing both patiently [read smiling, kind, and acting mature] since the world does not revolve around me! Who knew this journey towards a motorcycle would be filled with life lessons too?!

  1. Yes patience is my fault too. I don’t have much of it either. You can relate to “wanting it now without the waiting part”, I assume. But unfortunately the world doesn’t work that way. Apparently good things come to those who wait, they even say.

Just take it one day at a time and eventually what you’re waiting for will come. When the “special day” arrives it was all worth being patient for.

  2. Why is it that we find it so hard to just be still?! You are not alone! I am beginning to learn to savor the anticipation, feel the excitement build, and it’s kinda fun. 😉

Am envisioning you on that blue bike already…helmet to match…that cool look in your eyes….and in heels, who says you ever have to choose?!

  3. Yes, patience is a virtue for a reason, and all good things are worth waiting for. You’re going to love riding your bike!!!
We are in the same generation, my story is similar to yours, sans the hubby, and now I ride a 650 Ninja. It has been the best decision I made for the maintenance of my sanity, and heck yeah, it’s just plain fun. If my attitude of gratitude is slipping, I just get on my bike and within minutes I realize how wonderful it is to be there!!
Please get the bike that makes you happy, but I urge you not to get a HD – they are more of a lifstyle accessory than a performance machine. I’m sure I’ll be vilified for that, but hey, just my two cents. There are cruiser style bikes that cost half and are better performing (Kawi, Suzi), but, again, it’s what makes you happy that’s important.
Welcome to the world of one wheel drive. Keep the shiny side up!!!

  4. Amazing. Hollywood taught a positive message. Well, I won’t get used to that. I’ll have to watch reruns of Leave It To Beaver to get my moral bearings.

Randomevent is right about Harleys. In the past, they were a lot less reliable than the rice burners and twice the cost. I hear Harley’s reliability has gotten a lot better, but their prices still leave you gasping for air.

Like she said though, buy what feels comfortable.

  5. My wireless was just down and I was on the phone with Comcast {i was so patient, you’d been proud}
Anyways, I have no idea how to contribute to what bike you should get. But, I can see you have great advisers!
