Snow, Exercise, and Food

Snow

Today is April 14, 2013. I thought for sure I would have been out on my motorcycle by now! I couldn’t have been more wrong. Spring is no where to be found here in Minnesota. We’ve had snow, followed by more snow, and then snow. Today we had a little remix of snow, ice, and rain. Make it stop!!

Exercise

Enough whining. So, what have I been up to? Well I’m still working on training for The Color Run 5K in July. I did a preset workout on my treadmill today called the Maui 5K. It varies the incline to be similar to the actual three mile course in Hawaii [wish I were in Hawaii] and I’ll continue training indoor until the weather cooperates. I worked out listening to Classic Rock on Pandora. It is a nice way to keep a pace steady. Anyone else run to a Pandora station? Suggestions are welcome.

Food

Another change that hubby and I have made is to our diet after watching Forks over Knives documentary. There are a couple of health issues hubby has wrestled with and we are not a fan of popping pills so dietary changes seem like a good course to try. We picked up the book The Engine 2 Diet to follow the 28 day meal plans based on a plant strong diet. We are two weeks in and liking it!

Here are a couple of meals we’ve had lately.

Snow, exercise, Food
Tomato soap, salad with lots of sprouts, and open faced refried bean sandwich
Snow, exercise, Food - Plant strong pizza with almond/soy cheese

This is quite a bit of a change from our previous lean meat and dairy diet and takes some planning. Hubby made me a chalkboard for the kitchen. Love it!!

I’ve been really encouraged by Trobairtiz‘s other blog Trobairitz Table d’hote | A  Motorcyclist’s Adventures with Vegan Cuisine. Great resource for more recipes. Yay!

My name is Pam and I am so glad you stopped by today! I started this blog to document my journey into motorcycling and along the way I met so many other lady riders with inspiring stories to tell I began to share theirs as well.

About the same time I started this blog I joined Twitter (@helmetorheels) and began to meet other female motorcycle riders. These ladies were so inspiring to me because I found other newbies like me to life-long experienced riders who were willing to share encouragement, tips, and their friendship. I was welcomed where I was on my journey. What an incredible community I found online to fuel my desire to ride. Catch us on Instagram @helmetorheels and Pinterest @helmetorheels – we are just getting started!

  1. I started to run as well this month. I worked my way up to running 5miles on the treadmill so I am very much happy. I gave up soda and candy as well. I am going to focus on Hike and Bike this Riding Year instead of driving my ride to the Ice Cream Place. I heard those color runs are a blast. Good Luck!

  2. Thanks for the shout out Pam. I am glad you are enjoying the plant based diet so far. Hopefully your hubby is feeling better. Nice job on the crafty chalkboard too.

Your training sounds like it is coming along. I was supposed to do a 5k on Saturday but is was raining and 38˚ and that just didn’t sound like fun so I didn’t go. I walked to work and back last Wednesday (5k each way) so I figured I got my exercise in.

  3. Pretty ambitious and a dramatic change in diet. How long have you been on it? We had our first 5K of the year and this year was the first time I skipped in the last 5 years. It was barely above 0 at the starting line….

    1. Richard – We took a week to slowly take meat/dairy out of the diet and then went full speed ahead. We are starting our third week. Feeling great. Hubby has been surprised because he really is satisfied with the dietary change.
